African Union Chairperson Welcomes Peace Dialogue Between Rwanda and DRC Leaders

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission welcomed the outcomes of the Doha meeting between President Kagame of Rwanda and President Tshisekedi of the DRC. This discussion was pivotal in reaffirming their commitment to a ceasefire and peaceful conflict resolution. The African Union remains dedicated to supporting African-led solutions and emphasizes the need for ongoing cooperation among stakeholders.

On 19 March 2025, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, expressed his approval of the trilateral meeting between President Paul Kagame of Rwanda and President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which took place in Doha. The meeting, hosted by the State of Qatar under His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, served as a notable effort to enhance dialogue and foster peace in the Eastern DRC region.

Chairperson Youssouf commended the leaders for demonstrating a commitment to addressing the ongoing crisis through dialogue. He acknowledged their recognition that peace and stability are crucial for their nations’ prosperity and the broader Great Lakes region. The leaders reaffirmed their dedication to an immediate, unconditional ceasefire, originally established during the EAC and SADC summit held in Dar es Salaam on 8 February 2025.

The African Union continues to champion African-led initiatives for resolving continental issues, which are evident in the ongoing Luanda and Nairobi processes. The discussions in Doha are viewed as a constructive step that complements existing regional mechanisms.
