AAC Condemns President Tinubu’s Emergency Rule Declaration in Rivers State
The AAC condemned President Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, labeling it an attack on democracy and a regression in governance. They criticized it as cowardly, hypocritical, and indicative of a broader authoritarian trend. The party urged citizens to resist any imposition of military-style rule amid escalating political tensions in the state.
The African Action Congress (AAC) has expressed strong condemnation regarding President Bola Tinubu’s recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, labeling it a “coup staged against Nigerians” and an attack on democracy. The party asserts this action sets a perilous standard for governance in Nigeria, believing it indicates a broader scheme to undermine democratic principles.
Femi Adeyeye, the National Publicity Secretary of the AAC, criticized Tinubu’s declaration as cowardly and unpresidential, stating it represents a blatant assault on the rule of law. He emphasized that this move reflects Tinubu’s disregard for democratic processes in Nigeria’s governance, claiming it signals a significant degradation of democratic ideals in the country.
Additionally, the AAC accused Tinubu of depreciating the judiciary’s authority, noting that the courts had already deliberated on the ongoing issues within Rivers State. They contend that his actions convey a disdain for legal proceedings, leading to the perception that the rule of law is diminishing.
The AAC criticized Tinubu for hypocrisy, recalling his vehement opposition to former President Goodluck Jonathan’s declaration of a state of emergency in 2013. The party emphasized that such inconsistency undermines his credibility and manifests cowardice, as indicated by his current actions.
The party cautioned that Tinubu’s actions might be perceived internationally, particularly by neighboring countries in West Africa, as indicative of dictatorial governance. They pointed out that leaders in countries like Mali and Burkina Faso could view Tinubu’s conduct as laughable, given their own histories of military rule.
According to the AAC, both Tinubu and Minister Nyesom Wike bear responsibility for escalating the crisis in Rivers State. They maintain that governmental failure to restore order without violating constitutional rights demonstrates an ineptitude unbecoming of a legitimate government.
In light of this situation, the AAC has urged the Nigerian populace to remain vigilant and resistant against any attempts by Tinubu’s administration to impose military-style governance. They are also calling for unity among the citizenry to safeguard democratic principles amid these tumultuous developments.
The declaration followed the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and other officials, with President Tinubu citing security concerns and political instability as justifications. He accused Fubara of failing to execute necessary duties, and this action stems from fraught political dynamics following a significant power struggle between Fubara and his predecessor, Wike.
The AAC has firmly opposed President Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, criticizing it as an affront to democracy and legal processes. They argued that this move exemplifies Tinubu’s cowardice and hypocrisy and warns that it jeopardizes Nigeria’s democratic future while encouraging citizens to resist any authoritarian governance. As political tensions escalate, the call for vigilance among the populace is paramount to safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic integrity.
