Starting June 4, 2025, the ultra-low cost airline will operate flights from Abu Dhabi to Beirut three times a week, reinforcing its commitment to enhancing tourism and facilitating travel between the UAE and Lebanon.

Johan Eidhagen, Managing Director of Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, noted the significance of this expansion. He stated, “This is a sign of Lebanon normalizing and focusing back again on VFR [visiting friends and relatives] traffic, but also building tourism back in the region.” He expressed optimism that the tourism recovery in Lebanon will occur rapidly, as the Middle Eastern tourism market grows substantially.

Tourism is vital for Lebanon, which has faced a drastic economic downturn, with a reported contraction of 7.1% in GDP last year due to conflict, according to a recent World Bank report. Since 2019, Lebanon’s GDP has decreased by nearly 40%. The restoration and recovery efforts are estimated to require funding of about $11 billion, indicating the heavy reliance on tourism for economic revitalization.

Mr. Eidhagen elaborated on the timing of the new route, explaining that recent regional developments, such as increased normalization following the ceasefire in Gaza, made this moment opportune. He emphasized the airline’s intention to stimulate travel demand, asserting that the new flights would help revitalize the market. Wizz Air will utilize its Airbus A321 aircraft, characterized by high passenger capacity, to ensure competitive pricing and market demand fulfillment.

To encourage travel, one-way tickets from Abu Dhabi to Beirut will begin at a cost of Dh359, representing a 40% reduction compared to existing fares on that route. This pricing strategy aims to broaden the demographic of travelers to include those who previously found air travel financially unfeasible. The company is targeting the substantial Lebanese diaspora in the UAE, alongside tourists seeking brief getaways to Beirut.

Mr. Eidhagen remarked that while immediate load factors may not be extraordinarily high, the initiative is viewed as a long-term investment in the future of regional travel. He emphasized the airline’s goal to create a market for affordable point-to-point travel between the UAE and Lebanon, estimating that increased affordability would motivate people to travel more frequently.

In addition to the Beirut route, Wizz Air Abu Dhabi announced a new destination in Gabala, Azerbaijan, set to begin on June 19, 2025. Mr. Eidhagen characterized Gabala as a distinctive location appealing to travelers seeking cooler climates. This new route exemplifies the airline’s ongoing expansion strategy, with Wizz Air Abu Dhabi adding new destinations despite temporarily suspending the Athens route to prioritize new opportunities.
