UAE Ambassador Hosts Interfaith Iftar to Foster Unity and Tolerance in Uganda
H.E. Abdalla Hassan AlShamsi, the UAE Ambassador to Uganda, hosted an interfaith Iftar to promote tolerance and unity during Ramadan. In a demonstration of unity during Ramadan, H.E. Abdalla Hassan AlShamsi, the UAE Ambassador to Uganda, hosted an interfaith Iftar attended by religious leaders, government officials, and dignitaries. Dr. Rashid Yahaya Ssemddu, the Ugandan Ambassador to Sudan, expressed appreciation for the initiative, stating, “I want to thank my brother, His Excellency, Ambassador Abdalla Hassan AlShamsi, who has been here for this wonderful initiative, which brings together the followers of different religions in our country.” He noted the importance of communal living among Ugandans, irrespective of their religious beliefs.
Dr. Ssemddu also commended the UAE’s consistent generosity, recalling a previous year when over 10,000 packages were distributed to vulnerable groups, including refugees and police officers. He confirmed that similar efforts will continue this year.
The event also emphasized the strengthening relationship between Uganda and the UAE. Hon. Henry Okello Oryem, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, highlighted the UAE as the largest foreign investor in Uganda, noting ongoing ambitious projects including an international airport in Kidepo and a nuclear power plant aimed at significantly boosting Uganda’s electricity supply.
Bishop Jackson Matovu of Central Buganda diocese remarked on the spiritual dimensions of the gathering, emphasizing the shared fasting period of Ramadan and Lent. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to come together over a meal, reflecting the unity fostered by the event.
The interfaith Iftar illustrated the significance of dialogue across cultural and religious divides. Ambassador AlShamsi’s initiative not only celebrated Ramadan but also demonstrated Uganda’s dedication to fostering social cohesion and peaceful coexistence among diverse communities.
