Three Tornadoes Confirmed in CSRA Following Severe Weather Events
Three tornadoes were confirmed in the CSRA after severe storms struck on Sunday, resulting in significant damage in Burke and Barnwell Counties. An EF-1 tornado caused further destruction in Paulding County, Georgia, while South Carolina reported an EF-1 tornado affecting Lake Murray. Damage assessments and community responses illustrate the storms’ impact across the region.
On Sunday morning, severe storms in the CSRA resulted in the confirmation of three tornadoes by the National Weather Service. Surveys conducted in Barnwell and Burke counties revealed that two EF-0 tornadoes occurred in Burke County and one in Barnwell County. The tornadoes primarily affected areas east of Girard, in Burke County, and locations between Snelling and Barnwell in Barnwell County.
Although classified as EF-0, the lowest rating on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, these tornadoes are capable of causing significant damage. Earlier that day, radar readings had already prompted at least five tornado warnings across the CSRA, but the official confirmation came a day later.
In South Carolina, a tornado was reported to have touched down at Lake Murray around 7:38 a.m. on Sunday, remaining active until 7:48 a.m. This EF-1 tornado caused substantial damage, particularly in the Timberlake neighborhood and near Isle of Pines Drive. It was approximately 125 yards wide and traveled a path of 5.8 miles with peak winds recorded at around 90 mph.
In Paulding County, Georgia, an EF-1 tornado inflicted significant damage, impacting 14 homes, as reported by the county sheriff’s office. Residents reported considerable destruction from fallen trees, along with damage to local businesses, including a gas station and a grocery store. Thankfully, the Burgess family, caught in the chaos, reported no injuries, although their home sustained serious damage.
The Mitchell County area also faced tornado damage, including the Pebble City Baptist Church, which lost its steeple, and a nearby community center reduced to rubble. Pastor Ronnie Kinsaul expressed gratitude for their safety, believing divine intervention saved their church from more severe destruction.
Finally, a tornado near Troy, Alabama, resulted in downed power lines and compromised roads, while two fatalities were reported in Dallas County, Alabama, due to severe weather. The storms also led to significant damage in other nearby communities, confirming the widespread impact of the severe weather across the region.
The recent severe weather that swept through the CSRA and surrounding areas, resulting in the confirmation of three tornadoes, underscores the destructive power of even low-rated tornadoes. The damage reported spans multiple counties, affecting homes and businesses alike, while community resilience shines through as neighbors come together to assist one another. Reports of serious damage in South Carolina and Georgia highlight the extensive impact, with several injuries avoided due to timely updates and alerts.
