Syrian Forces Take Control: Ceasefire Agreement Holds on Lebanese-Syrian Border

A ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Syria has been implemented on the eastern border, overseen by military officials. Syrian forces have taken control of a town, causing distress among displaced residents. Despite military presence and attempts to negotiate troop withdrawal, tensions remain unaddressed, and humanitarian aid efforts are underway.

A ceasefire on Lebanon’s eastern border, initiated by an agreement between the Lebanese and Syrian defense ministers, remains intact, with military intelligence and security officials from both nations overseeing its enforcement. Reinforcements from the military’s airborne regiment are stationed near Hawsh al-Sayyid Ali, though they have yet to engage in active operations as of the latest reports.

Attempts at negotiations between Lebanese military intelligence and Syrian forces have yet to yield results in terms of withdrawing Syrian troops or facilitating the return of displaced families. Concurrently, the International Committee of the Red Cross is involved in recovering the body of a Lebanese man killed outside his home in the town, ensuring its return to his family.

The ceasefire on the Lebanese-Syrian border, facilitated by a bilateral agreement, persists amidst significant tensions and continuing humanitarian challenges. Despite military oversight, displaced residents express deep discontent due to their inability to return home. Negotiations aimed at securing troop withdrawal and the return of affected individuals remain unresolved while the ICRC assists in local recovery efforts.
