The Syrian Ministry of Defense further indicated that this agreement entails enhanced coordination and cooperation between both nations.

On Monday, March 17, Lebanese President Michel Aoun ordered military action in retaliation against gunfire originating from Syria, which followed deadly border clashes. The Lebanese Ministry of Health confirmed that these confrontations resulted in the deaths of seven Lebanese citizens and injuries to 52 others, including a young girl aged four.

The confrontation initially erupted when the temporary Syrian government accused the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah of crossing the border on March 15, resulting in the kidnapping and subsequent killing of three soldiers in Lebanon. Hezbollah has refuted these claims, with some sources suggesting that local border clans, not directly affiliated with Hezbollah, may be involved in cross-border smuggling operations.

These border clashes mark the most severe confrontations since December, following the overthrow of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. In the context of the Middle East, post-Assad Syria is grappling with significant political and security turmoil, particularly after the Islamic movement Hayat Tahrir al-Sham was ousted from power.
