Strengthening Catholic Identity in Ghana’s Schools: Insights from the Second National Catholic Education Forum

The Second National Catholic Education Forum in Ghana concluded with a strong appeal for leaders of Catholic educational institutions to reinforce the Catholic identity within their schools. Hosted by the Catholic Diocese of Koforidua from March 10 to 15, the forum focused on the theme, “Catholic Education for Integral Development: Shaping a Resilient and Inclusive Ghana.” The message delivered by the President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) emphasized that effective education requires a collaborative effort and well-defined partnerships among stakeholders.
Following the forum, Bishop Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi of the Catholic Diocese of Sunyani outlined recommendations aimed at enhancing cooperation among various religious organizations. He urged collaboration with the Christian Council of Ghana, Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council, Office of the National Chief Imam, and Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission Ghana. This partnership is essential for reviewing the draft Memorandum of Understanding regarding the management of Mission/Unit schools, with an aim toward Government implementation for the upcoming academic year of 2025/2026.
Bishop Gyamfi further proposed that a committee be established by the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference to create a national strategic framework for Catholic Education within five years, to be finalized by July 2025. He highlighted the importance of infusing Catholic identity into schools through teaching Catholic doctrines, constructing chapels, enhancing the presence of clergy, and appointing chaplains at various educational levels.
