Shashi Tharoor Reflects on India’s Stance in Ukraine Conflict

Shashi Tharoor expressed regret for his past criticism of India’s position on the Russia-Ukraine war, now recognizing India’s potential role in achieving peace. He reiterated his stance from 2022, emphasizing violations of international law and the importance of India’s involvement in peacekeeping if an agreement arises between Russia and Ukraine.

Congress Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor expressed regret regarding his earlier criticism of India’s position during the onset of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022. He reflected on how, at that time, he advocated for India’s condemnation of Russian aggression. Tharoor acknowledged that, due to the adopted policy, India now holds a significant role in promoting lasting peace in the conflict region.

In his remarks from 2022, Tharoor stated that India confronted complex challenges in formulating its response to the Ukraine-Russia crisis. He pointed out that the initial statements from India appeared to avoid upsetting Russia. He further noted, “I am still wiping the egg off my face because I am one person in the parliamentary debate who actually criticised the Indian position at the time back in February 2022.”

Tharoor’s criticism stemmed from the perceived violations of the United Nations charter, specifically the breach of a state’s sovereignty, referencing Ukraine’s territorial integrity. He articulated that India now possesses the unique capability to facilitate peace efforts that few other nations could manage, attributing this to various factors, including geographical distance from Europe.

While clarifying his position as a member of the opposition, Tharoor indicated that India may consider deploying peacekeepers if a mutually agreed peace were established between Russia and Ukraine. He compared this potential to past resistance experienced in 2003 regarding troop deployments to Iraq, emphasizing, “I think if it were necessary and there was an agreed peace, I think there would be some willingness to consider.” However, he reiterated, “But I can’t speak for the government, I am in the opposition.”
