Peru’s President Urges Business Leaders to Unite Against Crime

President Dina Boluarte has urged Peru’s business leaders to invest in security projects totaling S/1.6 billion under the ‘Works for Taxes – Alliance for Security’. Key initiatives include improvements to prisons and the construction of police facilities. The collective goal is to combat crime effectively and foster national and foreign investment, with Boluarte advocating for further serious discussions on implementing the death penalty for severe crimes.

On Tuesday, President Dina Boluarte of Peru urged business leaders to join forces against crime and delinquency. She proposed investing in 47 projects under the “Works for Taxes – Alliance for Security” initiative, amounting to S/1.6 billion (approximately US$439 million). Boluarte emphasized the necessity for unity, stating, “We are aware of your commitment to the country, and call on you to be a single fist against delinquency and crime by investing in any of the 47 projects—ideally, in all of them.”

Among the key projects highlighted by President Boluarte are the construction of a new prison in the Cusco region, improvements to Challapalca Prison, modernization efforts for Lurigancho Prison in Lima, and the establishment of a maximum-security area in Ancon I Prison. The agenda also includes enhancing security systems in strategic prisons and constructing police stations in critical areas, acquisition of technology for criminal investigations, and implementation of video surveillance systems.

The President noted, “Everything contributes to building a safer Peru; besides, the public and private sectors can and must come together to achieve it. This is not the first time we have done so; since December 7, 2022, we have walked this path together, and the results are there.” She assured that the projects under the Works for Taxes scheme guarantee transparency in the fight against criminality.

Boluarte detailed the government’s recent successes in combating crime, citing the capture of gangs and their transfer to Challapalca Prison in 2024. “There is still much left to strengthen, which is why we are launching the Alliance for Security,” she declared, underlining the importance of collective efforts in combating crime.

The President expressed confidence in ongoing efforts to maintain peace and stability, stating that violence and disruptions would not foster change in the country. “Let us continue advancing on the path of generating confidence in the world so that more investments can come to the country,” she urged. Furthermore, she reiterated her call for serious political debate regarding the introduction of the death penalty for serious offenders, emphasizing the importance of public safety.
