Nepal Appeals to US for Assistance in Securing Release of Bipin Joshi
Nepal’s Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba met with US officials to seek support for the release of Bipin Joshi, held by Hamas. The discussions highlighted strengthening Nepal-US relations and Deuba’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to secure Joshi’s freedom following the October 2023 Hamas attack.
During a recent meeting in New Delhi, Minister for Foreign Affairs Arzu Rana Deuba requested United States support for the release of Bipin Joshi, a Nepali national held captive by Hamas. This discussion occurred with Ricky Gill, Special Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs, amid the 10th Raisina Dialogue hosted by India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
The conversation addressed various matters, notably the strengthening of Nepal-US relations, anchored in shared democratic values and human rights. Minister Deuba expressed optimism regarding the potential for enhanced cooperation between the two nations in the foreseeable future.
Deuba reiterated her previous appeals to the United States government for Joshi’s freedom, highlighting that Nepal has also sought assistance from Israel, Qatar, Egypt, and other nations in this endeavor. She expressed hope that the US could play a crucial role in securing Joshi’s release.
Bipin Joshi was kidnapped during the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023, which resulted in significant casualties, including the deaths of ten Nepali citizens. Since the incident, the Government of Nepal has been actively engaged in diplomatic initiatives aimed at Joshi’s safe return, with Minister Deuba raising the issue at numerous national and regional platforms, including the United Nations, as well as in bilateral discussions.
