Jaishankar Critiques West’s Double Standards on Kashmir and Global Governance

At the Raisina Dialogue 2024, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar criticized the West and UN for reframing the Kashmir invasion into a dispute, highlighting the inconsistencies in their global governance. He urged for transparency in international relations and noted the selective engagement with the Taliban. During a session at the Raisina Dialogue 2024, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar raised concerns regarding what he perceives as the West and the United Nations’ double standards concerning the Kashmir issue. He criticized the narrative that has reframed an invasion as a dispute, thus equating the aggressor with the victim, undermining the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Jaishankar remarked that since World War II, the ongoing illegal occupation of Kashmir represents one of the most prolonged cases. He addressed the culpable parties, which, according to him, include the UK, Canada, Belgium, Australia, and the United States, stating, “…Who were the culpable parties? UK, Canada, Belgium, Australia, USA? So pardon me, I have some question marks on that whole topic…”

Additionally, he pointed out the inconsistency in Western responses to military coups in different regions, emphasizing the need for an honest audit of global governance over the past eighty years. He remarked on the shifting balances of power and called for a new and transparent dialogue regarding international relations.

Jaishankar further critiqued the West’s engagement with the Taliban, noting its previous acceptance during the Doha and Oslo processes, where they were described unfavorably. He highlighted the selective nature of acceptance, suggesting that the standards of extremism are applied differently based on convenience, stating, “…when it suits you to deal with the Taliban, they are okay. When it is not, they are not okay…”

The Raisina Dialogue, scheduled from March 17-19, is a significant platform focusing on geopolitics and geoeconomics in India, co-hosted by the Observer Research Foundation and the Ministry of External Affairs.
