China Expresses Interest in Supporting Ukraine’s Post-War Reconstruction

China has announced its intent to aid in Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction, contingent upon the wishes of the involved parties. A spokesperson for the China International Development Cooperation Agency indicated that this assistance aligns with remarks made by Ukrainian President Zelensky about China’s potential role in peace restoration. The estimated cost for Ukraine’s recovery is $524 billion, with only $13 billion addressed so far.

On Monday, China expressed its desire to play a role in the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine, as announced by its foreign aid agency. Li Ming, a spokesman for the China International Development Cooperation Agency, confirmed that China aims to assist “in accordance with the wishes of the parties” involved.

Li emphasized that China is prepared to offer support to the best of its capabilities, which includes contributing to future reconstruction efforts in Ukraine. His statements follow Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s remarks from last month, in which he indicated that China could play a role in peace restoration and reconstruction efforts.

According to a joint report by Ukrainian authorities, the World Bank Group, the European Commission, and the United Nations, the estimated cost for recovery and reconstruction in Ukraine over the next decade stands at approximately $524 billion. Thus far, Kyiv has disbursed $13 billion towards initial recovery needs, with assistance from international partners and the private sector.

China aims to actively engage in the reconstruction of Ukraine post-conflict, expressing readiness to assist based on the desires of the involved parties. The immense financial challenge of rebuilding Ukraine is underscored by the estimated $524 billion required over the next decade, with only a fraction of this secured so far.
