Cambodia Optimistic About US Visa Ban Consideration Ahead of New Restrictions
Cambodia anticipates fair treatment amidst potential US visa restrictions affecting 43 countries. The country’s Foreign Affairs Ministry emphasizes its cooperation on deportations, as it falls under the Yellow category, which poses the least restrictions. Officials express optimism that bilateral relations and efforts to expedite deportations will result in positive consideration by the US.
Cambodia is optimistic about receiving fair treatment regarding the anticipated US visa restrictions that may affect 43 countries, as stated by a spokesperson from the Foreign Affairs Ministry. This comes in the wake of reports that the Trump administration is contemplating these new travel measures. The proposed restrictions would be organized into three categories: Red, Orange, and Yellow, reflecting the severity of the bans.
Currently, Cambodia has been categorized in the Yellow list, which is the least restrictive category. This classification includes 21 nations, while the more severe, Red category will prohibit entry for citizens from 11 countries, including Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, and Venezuela. The Orange category encompasses another set of countries, also subject to significant visa restrictions.
Countries on the Yellow list will reportedly receive 60 days to address the US administration’s unspecified concerns, particularly related to the repatriation of Cambodian citizens convicted of crimes in the US. Chum Sounry indicated that the Foreign Affairs Ministry has not yet received formal notification regarding these potential restrictions and is actively seeking clarity through diplomatic channels.
He further noted Cambodia’s commitment to cooperating with the US on the repatriation process. The Cambodian authorities have been facilitating interviews and issuing travel documents to expedite the return of nationals facing deportation. Sounry expressed confidence that Cambodia’s cooperation and the positive state of bilateral relations would be favorably acknowledged by US officials.
As of November 2024, statistics indicated there were 1,747 Cambodians awaiting deportation, as recorded by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Despite this, no specific figures have been provided in the current context regarding the number of individuals impacted by the potential visa restrictions.
In conclusion, Cambodia remains hopeful for fair treatment amid proposed US visa restrictions. The Foreign Affairs Ministry emphasizes full cooperation with the US regarding the repatriation of Cambodian nationals. Given the country’s collaborative efforts and the positive nature of bilateral relations, officials are optimistic that these factors will influence the US administration’s decisions favorably. Continued diplomacy will be essential in addressing the concerns outlined by the US authorities.
