The company intends to install over 4,000 of these enhanced charging stations throughout China, addressing the significant challenges of extended charging times and limited driving range that have historically hindered the transition from gasoline and diesel vehicles to electric alternatives.

The launch of BYD’s rapid charging technology has stirred notable market reactions, with Tesla experiencing a decline in its share price. The BYD brand, which translates to “Build Your Dreams,” has commenced pre-sales of its upgraded Han L and Tang L models. Historically, BYD originated as a battery manufacturer, subsequently advancing its battery and energy storage technologies while expanding its global automotive presence.

According to BYD’s founder, Wang Chuanfu, the company’s 1 megawatt flash chargers provide sufficient energy for approximately 400 kilometers (about 250 miles) of travel in just five minutes. This innovation employs ultra-high voltage and substantial current capabilities to optimize charging speeds, aiming to alleviate user concerns regarding charging durations. Wang asserted the company’s commitment, stating, “To completely solve users’ anxiety over charging, our pursuit is to make the charging time for EVs as short as the refueling time for fuel vehicles.”

The advanced flash-charging system utilizes proprietary silicon carbide power chips capable of handling voltage levels up to 1,500V. Moreover, the Blade lithium-iron phosphate battery, regarded as one of the safest and most efficient globally, has garnered recognition, with Tesla incorporating it into certain EV models. Last year, BYD manufactured over 4.3 million new energy vehicles, achieving a 41% increase from the previous year, including 1.8 million battery-electric and 2.5 million plug-in hybrid vehicles.

While BYD’s top-tier models are expected to retail for up to $40,000, the company also offers more affordable options, like the Seagull, priced around $12,000 in China. In production statistics for 2024, BYD edged past Tesla, producing 1,777,965 battery-powered EVs, in contrast to Tesla’s 1,773,443 units. Despite its successes, BYD faces challenges; according to JD Power’s 2024 China New Energy Vehicle Initial Quality Study, the BYD Seal and Song Plus battery electrics ranked poorly in quality assessments.
