Forensic examinations revealed at least 15 victims, predominantly shot in the head. Notably, some showed signs of having been alive when they were thrown into the well, stated Hisham Zain al-Abdin, the director of forensic medicine for Khartoum state.

Additional bodies were found abandoned on roadsides and concealed in basements within the Sharg Elnil district, with several victims discovered bound, indicating potential executions. “There were horrifying scenes here,” remarked Zain al-Abdin.

As Sudan approaches the second anniversary of its civil war, government forces have successfully reclaimed areas previously held by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group that separated from the military in April 2023. Authorities are claiming to uncover evidence of extensive killings in these RSF strongholds.

The RSF has yet to respond to the allegations. Historically, they have rejected claims of widespread human rights violations within their territories and promised that individual offenders would be held accountable. The paramilitary group has also accused the military of committing similar atrocities, accusations that the military has consistently dismissed.

Local resident Hussein Al-Faki, who reported the bodies, shared that civilians attempted to bury the victims but were warned to refrain from doing so by RSF fighters controlling the area.
