UTM Plans Memorial Pillar for Saulos Chilima Amidst Political Challenges

The United Transformation Movement (UTM), represented by its National Campaign Director, Maquenda Chunga, announced plans to construct a memorial pillar at the plane crash site in Chikangawa, commemorating the late Saulos Chilima. This declaration was made during a rally at Katoto Secondary School Grounds in Mzuzu, where Chunga confirmed that the party is currently seeking consent from Chilima’s family for this initiative.

Chunga emphasized the enduring mourning experienced by the UTM for its founder, saying, “We as UTM are still and shall continue mourning the late Chilima who was the founder of the party… to honor him, we shall construct a memorial pillar at the scene of the accident in Chikangawa.”

Furthermore, Chunga addressed rumors regarding UTM leadership’s involvement in the controversial age limit bill, stating, “That’s a total lie. Our President Dalitso Kabambe has nothing to do with such undemocratic bill… we are ready for any presidential candidate but at the end we shall carry the flag.”

UTM President Dalitso Kabambe also spoke on the current administration’s failures, criticizing President Lazarus Chakwera’s government for issues such as corruption and increasing living costs.

Felix Njawala, the UTM publicity secretary, condemned the violent incidents that occurred during recent vendor demonstrations, arguing that the police had become politicized and were misusing their authority, which led to the chaos.

UTM presidential advisor Mathews Mtumbuka criticized the Chakwera administration’s failure to fulfill development promises for the northern region, stating that significant projects had not materialized. He suggested that giving Kabambe the opportunity to lead would bring about necessary changes.

Patricia Kaliati, an advisor to Kabambe, expressed concern over some senior UTM members abandoning the party and Chilima’s legacy shortly after his passing.
