Taiwan’s Deputy NSA Participates in Global Summit for the First Time
Hsu Szu-chien, Taiwan’s Deputy National Security Adviser, is set to participate in the Raisina Dialogue in India, marking a notable public engagement for a senior Taiwanese official. His discussion on treaty challenges will include participation from international experts, indicating a shift towards greater visibility for Taiwanese officials in global forums.
Hsu Szu-chien, the Deputy Secretary-General of Taiwan’s National Security Council and advisor at the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy, is set to participate in this year’s Raisina Dialogue. His engagement marks a significant moment as it may represent the first instance of a senior Taiwanese official openly attending a formal event in India. Hsu’s delegation includes I-Chung Lai, president of The Prospect Foundation, which focuses on global political, economic, and security issues.
Traditionally, the visits of senior Taiwanese security officials have been discreet, with previous attendees at the Raisina Dialogue not engaging in public events. Observers have noted that while Taiwanese officials have attended in the past, their participation has typically been kept low-profile. Hsu’s appearance, along with a public panel discussion, signifies a shift in this practice.
During the dialogue, Hsu will contribute to a panel discussion entitled “Stress Test: Treaties Face Moment of Truth”, scheduled for Monday. The panel will also feature Władysław Teofil Bartoszewski, Poland’s Secretary of State, alongside experts from the United States and Germany. Hsu’s recent activities include discussions with members of President Donald Trump’s transition team, coinciding with increased military maneuvers by China near the Taiwan Strait.
Hsu Szu-chien’s participation in the Raisina Dialogue represents a pivotal moment in Taiwan’s international engagement, highlighting a departure from the traditionally low-key involvement of senior Taiwanese officials. This event not only underscores Taiwan’s proactive approach to global issues but also signals a recognition of Taiwan’s role in international discourse. The involvement of diverse international experts alongside Hsu further emphasizes the significance of the discussions at this summit.
