Strengthening Parliamentary Cooperation Between Morocco and Mexico

These dialogues occurred on the sidelines of the World Conference of Women Parliamentarians organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union, which was held in the Mexican capital on Saturday.

The Moroccan delegation was composed of notable Members of Parliament, including Laila Ahl Sidi Mouloud of the National Rally of Independents, Nadia Benzedfa from the Authenticity and Modernity Party, Aicha El Karji from the Socialist Union of Popular Forces, and advisor Hind El Ghazali.

During these meetings, the Moroccan representatives showcased their nation’s initiatives to promote women’s representation in legislative and political spheres. They discussed the significance of parliamentary dialogue in fortifying legislative partnerships and championing common goals. Notable Mexican officials, including Alejandro Murat Hinojosa, the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Martha Elena Patricio, Chairwoman of the Gender Equality Committee, were key discussion partners.

The delegation conversed with MP Cynthia López Castro and MP Anahí González Hernández about bolstering women’s participation in legislative processes and exchanging best practices regarding supportive laws and initiatives for women’s political engagement.

Morocco’s reforms aimed at enhancing women’s representation were emphasized, particularly the constitutional principle of parity established in Article 19, coupled with the current government structure where women occupy seven of 23 ministerial positions. The Moroccan representatives also commended Mexico’s advances in female political representation, especially post the election of Claudia Sheinbaum as the first female president.

In addition to women’s issues, the meetings addressed key subjects such as renewable energy and migration, recognizing that both nations serve as significant transit points for migrants.
