The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Paraguay (IELP) convened its 43rd General Assembly on March 8-9 in Loma Plata, Chaco Paraguayo. During this assembly, Rev. Alceu Alton Figur was reelected as president for an additional three-year term. The theme for this year’s convention was “Guided,” inspired by Romans 8:14.
President Figur expressed his gratitude for his reelection, stating, “Being reelected to another three-year term is a privilege and a great honour.” He emphasized his faith, mentioning Psalm 121 as a reassurance that God will provide support amidst challenges faced by the church.
In his reflection on contemporary issues, President Figur noted, “Leading the church in postmodern times is a huge challenge.” He highlighted the erosion of family values and the attacks on Christian principles, while affirmatively stating that the IELP is blessed with pastoral support across all parishes and is capable of sustaining its mission throughout Paraguay.
Having first been elected in 2022, President Figur is also the pastor of Cristo Rey Lutheran Church in Asunción and serves as the Latin America regional representative on the International Lutheran Council’s board. Rev. Dr. Klaus Detlev Schulz, the ILC General Secretary, expressed his support for President Figur’s ministry, saying, “May God continue to bless your service to the church in Paraguay.”
The assembly also engaged in elections for various church positions and celebrated the dedication of a new Lutheran mission church in Loma Plata. President Figur is actively involved in this new mission, traveling 500 kilometers from his home every two weeks to fulfill his duties. The IELP is affiliated with the International Lutheran Council, which upholds confessional Lutheran principles and the proclamation of the Gospel based on Holy Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions.
In summary, Rev. Alceu Alton Figur’s reelection as president of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Paraguay underscores his commitment to guiding the church through challenging contemporary issues. His leadership entails a focus on core values and ongoing mission efforts across the region. The assembly’s events reflected a robust commitment to both local and international Lutheran communities, fostering a spirit of cooperation and faith-driven dedication.
