Mbumba announced he would step down in four days, with the incoming president, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, set to take office on March 21. He pointed out, “You have already elected her [Nandi-Ndaitwah].”

During his tenure, which began in February 2022 after the passing of President Hage Geingob, Mbumba had pledged to complete Geingob’s term without seeking re-election.
