Nigeria and Cuba Strengthen Economic Ties and Diplomatic Cooperation

Vice President Kashim Shettima characterized Cuba as a “sacred land” for progressives during a meeting with Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla and Ambassador Miriam Morales Palmero in Abuja.

Shettima acknowledged Cuba’s historical role in Africa’s liberation movements, particularly in the anti-apartheid struggles in Southern Africa, underscoring Cuba’s significance in reflecting resilience and unity. He also pointed out the deep cultural and ancestral connections, stating that approximately 70% of Cuban Africans have roots in Nigeria. He assured the Cuban delegation of Nigeria’s commitment to enhancing partnerships, particularly in healthcare and vaccine development.

In his address, Foreign Minister Parrilla reminisced about the historical ties forged through shared struggles against colonialism and racism, emphasizing the contributions of Africans to Cuba’s development. He remarked, “Without the support of Africans and Nigeria from the very beginning of the Cuban revolution, we could hardly have survived.”

Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, reiterated the importance of the longstanding partnership, expressing Nigeria’s dedication to strengthening collaboration. He noted that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed to deepen bilateral ties and discussed key subjects such as economic relations, tourism, and technology during this meeting.
