NIGCOMSAT Launches Hackathon to Enhance Technological Skills in Nigeria

NIGCOMSAT launches a youth empowerment initiative in North-West Nigeria, featuring a Space-Tech Hackathon and VSAT training from April 7 to 11 in Dutse, Jigawa. The program aims at enhancing technological skills and improving broadband access in underserved areas. The initiative will involve mentorship, hands-on experience, and support for winning projects, while engaging hundreds of youths in specialized training.

The Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) has launched a youth empowerment initiative aimed at enhancing technological skills in Nigeria’s North-West region. This program seeks to improve broadband access in remote locations and will feature a Space-Tech Hackathon alongside Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) training, scheduled in Dutse, Jigawa, from April 7 to 11.

Aisha Bantam, NIGCOMSAT’s Head of Corporate Affairs, announced that the initiative targets university students, startups, and local innovators from states including Kaduna, Kano, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, and Jigawa. Previously, NIGCOMSAT hosted a similar event in the North-East, conducting a regional Space-Tech Hackathon in Yola, Adamawa State, from February 24 to 28, which involved grassroots innovation in satellite technology to foster economic and social impacts.

Jane Egerton-Idehen, NIGCOMSAT’s Managing Director, explained that the five-day event would offer mentorship and practical experience in satellite technology. “The hackathon provides participants with a platform to identify challenges, generate ideas, develop prototypes, and receive expert mentorship,” she elaborated.

The winning team will be enlisted in the NIGCOMSAT Accelerator Programme Cohort 2025, receiving additional support for their projects’ development and implementation. Furthermore, Egerton-Idehen confirmed the initiative will see 100 youths receiving specialized training in VSAT installation to enhance broadband connectivity in underprivileged areas.

She stressed the program’s primary aim is to foster technological innovation, solve community issues, and alleviate youth unemployment throughout Nigeria. This initiative is collaboratively organized by Jigawa State and NIGCOMSAT Ltd.

In conclusion, NIGCOMSAT’s initiative represents a significant investment in the future of Nigeria’s technological landscape. By targeting skills development and enhancing broadband access, the program addresses key challenges while engaging youth in innovative solutions. The collaborative effort, exemplified by previous events in other regions, underlines the commitment to reducing unemployment and promoting social growth through technology.
