Judicial Association Criticizes UNSMIL for Neglecting Human Rights Violations
The Libyan Association of Members of Judicial Bodies condemned UNSMIL for its inaction regarding recent assaults on Judge Ali Al-Sharif and lawyer Munir Abeid. They called for the UN mission to ensure equitable treatment of human rights cases and to adhere to its foundational principles. The association warned it might withdraw cooperation if UNSMIL does not align with its mandate, highlighting the troubling circumstances surrounding the arrests.
The Libyan Association of Members of Judicial Bodies has expressed serious concern over the perceived inaction of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), particularly its Rule of Law Section. The association criticized the mission for its “silence and negligence” regarding the recent arrest and assault on Judge Ali Al-Sharif and lawyer Munir Abeid, highlighting inadequacies in addressing human rights violations.
In a formal statement, the association urged the UN mission to engage equitably in human rights matters and to avoid selective responses in its communications. It emphasized the need for the mission and its human rights section to adhere strictly to the principles established in its founding resolution, advocating for consistency and integrity in its operations.
The association underscored that the Rule of Law Section is designated to support human rights and protect the integrity of the judicial system without intruding into judicial affairs. They warned that if the mission continues to stray from its mandate without supporting human rights and the rule of law, they may reconsider their cooperation with UNSMIL.
The situation escalated on Tuesday when Judge Ali Al-Sharif was reportedly assaulted at his residence in the Souq Al-Juma district of Tripoli by a security agency, leading to his detention. He was released following the intervention of Attorney General Al-Siddiq Al-Sour.
Additionally, the Libya Crimes Watch organization confirmed the arrest of lawyer Munir Abeid in Benghazi by armed men connected to the Internal Security Agency. He was taken to an unofficial detention facility without adherence to legal protocols, raising further concerns about the safety and rights of legal professionals in Libya.
The Libyan Association of Members of Judicial Bodies has articulated strong objections to the UNSMIL’s inadequate response to recent assaults against judicial members. By calling for equitable treatment of human rights cases and warning against a deviation from their legal mandates, the association underscores critical issues surrounding judicial integrity and human rights in Libya. The recent arrests of Judge Al-Sharif and lawyer Abeid illustrate the urgent need for UNSMIL to recommit to its foundational mission.
