Government Orders Action Against Wetland Encroachment in Eastern Uganda

The Ministry of Water and Environment in Uganda has ordered intensified efforts to restore wetlands in Eastern Uganda. Following directives, operations are ongoing to demolish illegal structures in wetlands. Community leaders emphasize the importance of water resource conservation due to pollution and unsustainable practices, while initiatives are underway to enhance environmental awareness and offer alternative livelihoods.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Water and Environment has mandated an increase in efforts for wetland restoration in Eastern Uganda. This directive is a response to ongoing operations assisted by police and military personnel aimed at dismantling illegal structures within wetlands. Lucy Lyango, Assistant Commissioner for Wetlands Management, articulated the importance of strict enforcement measures to reclaim wetlands and riverbanks.

Lyango stated, “We want to see the Directorate of Environment and NEMA more visible and proactive on the ground. All those illegally occupying wetlands will be evicted and held accountable under the law.” She assured that the regional team is fully prepared with adequate resources to support sustainable environmental efforts.

Vincent Woboya, Minister for Disaster in the Inzu Ya Masaba Cultural Institution, raised alarms regarding the deterioration of local water resources. He noted that pollution from local communities is significantly affecting rivers, which play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. “In Bugisu, we have several rivers crucial to our ecological balance, but they are being polluted by local communities,” Woboya remarked, urging for greater awareness regarding these water sources.

Woboya also highlighted the dire consequences of flooding and water scarcity, emphasizing that certain rivers are nearing a state of complete dryness during the dry season. He lamented, “People have cultivated right up to the riverbanks, and if given the chance, they would even cultivate inside the river,” pointing out how human interference exacerbates natural disasters.

Further adding to the conversation, Reverend Titus Kutosi from the Anglican Church of Uganda revealed initiatives aimed at environmental conservation through tree planting. He implored the government to foster alternative livelihoods for those reliant on wetland resources, stating, “Uganda is known for having great policies on paper, but if we want public trust, we must act on our words.”

Base Katami, the Mbale District Vice Chairperson, recognized the accomplishments of the government in revamping gravity water schemes but highlighted urgent needs in Bunambutye Sub-County where residents face severe water quality issues. Meanwhile, Deputy Mayor Harriet Kakai emphasized community accountability in maintaining water infrastructure, stating, “Why would someone destroy water pipes passing through their garden when the project is meant to benefit the entire community?” This underscores the importance of collaboration between the government and the public for effective environmental management.

The efforts to restore wetlands in Eastern Uganda are spearheaded by the Ministry of Water and Environment, emphasizing strict enforcement against illegal encroachments.
