On Monday, Israel and Argentina commemorate the 33rd anniversary of the tragic 1992 bombing of the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires. This heinous attack resulted in the loss of 29 lives, which included three Israeli embassy personnel and six local employees, alongside numerous Argentine civilians, some of whom were residents of a nearby nursing home and schoolchildren on a passing bus. The terrorist organization Hezbollah later claimed responsibility for this atrocity.

In remembrance, the Israeli embassy has initiated a campaign titled, “Every View Has a Story. Every Story Deserves to Be Told.” The memorial event will be held at the original embassy site, focusing on honoring the victims of the attack while highlighting their individual stories. The promotional video from the embassy articulates the essence of this initiative: “Through the eyes of survivors and families, we remember the tragedy and honor their stories. Each gaze holds a unique tale, filled with suffering, resilience, and hope. Today, more than three decades later, these gazes ask us not to forget.”

In a significant development, an Argentinian federal court, in April 2024, officially named Iran and Hezbollah as the perpetrators of the bombing, affirming their roles in organizing, financing, and executing the attack. The court further implicated several Iranian political and military figures, some of whom enjoyed diplomatic immunity at the time, and accused various Argentine officials of evidence tampering and cover-up attempts.

Additionally, six months post the confirmation of Iranian and Hezbollah involvement, Argentina’s Defense Minister Patricia Bullrich identified Hussein Ahmad Karaki as the orchestrator behind the attacks. Minister Bullrich described him as the head of Hezbollah operations in Latin America, noting his historical responsibility for multiple attacks in the region, including recent incidents.

The anniversary of the Israeli embassy bombing serves as a poignant reminder of the tragedy’s human toll, while the ongoing investigations emphasize the importance of accountability for heinous acts of terrorism.
