Cambodia Optimistic About US Visa Ban Response Amid Cooperation Efforts
Cambodia anticipates positive outcomes concerning impending U.S. visa restrictions due to its cooperative stance on the repatriation of citizens under removal orders. Reports indicate new travel classifications by the Trump administration, with Cambodia on the Yellow list, enabling a potential opportunity to address any concerns raised by the U.S.
The Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has expressed optimism concerning the potential impact of upcoming visa restrictions proposed by the United States. The spokesperson highlighted Cambodia’s fully cooperative approach in relation to Cambodian citizens affected by U.S. removal orders, suggesting that such efforts may be favorably considered amidst the anticipated changes.
Reports indicate that the Trump administration plans to implement new travel restrictions affecting 43 countries, which will be classified into three categories: Red, Orange, and Yellow, according to the severity of the measures. Cambodia is among 21 nations listed under the least restrictive Yellow category.
The Red category will enforce a complete ban on entry for citizens from 11 specified countries, such as Afghanistan and Venezuela. The Orange category will involve heavy visa restrictions for another 11 countries, including Belarus and Myanmar. The Yellow category encompasses nations like Angola and Zimbabwe, including Cambodia, and these countries will have a 60-day period to address concerns raised by the U.S. government.
While specific details regarding the concerns have not been disclosed, they may relate to the deportation of Cambodian nationals with criminal records in the U.S. Chum Sounry, the spokesperson for Cambodia’s foreign ministry, asserted that the ministry is currently seeking official information through diplomatic means, as no formal notification has yet been received.
He emphasized Cambodia’s commitment to cooperation, stating that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Interior, and the Cambodian embassy in the U.S. are actively collaborating with American authorities to facilitate the repatriation of nationals under removal orders. He expressed confidence that Cambodia’s efforts would be viewed positively, reinforcing the strong bilateral relations between the two nations.
In summary, Cambodia remains hopeful for a beneficial outcome regarding potential U.S. visa restrictions due to its full cooperation with the U.S. on repatriation matters. The upcoming classification of countries into Red, Orange, and Yellow categories has raised concerns, yet Cambodia’s diplomatic efforts and affiliations may mitigate negative consequences. This situation indicates the importance of continued collaboration in addressing concerns related to Cambodian nationals.
