Amnesty International Urges Focus on Human Rights During Dutch Royal Visit to Kenya

Amnesty International Kenya has urged the government to prioritize human rights in discussions during the upcoming royal visit of the Netherlands from March 18 to 20, 2025. Irungu Houghton stresses the importance of addressing human rights violations, especially following reports of excessive police force against protesters. The state visit, invited by President Ruto, aims to strengthen diplomatic relations while advocating accountability for human rights abuses in Kenya.

Amnesty International Kenya has urged the government to prioritize human rights discussions during the imminent state visit of His Majesty King Willem-Alexander and Her Majesty Queen Máxima from March 18 to 20, 2025. This visit aims to strengthen bilateral relations between Kenya and the Netherlands, and Amnesty International advocates using this opportunity to address pressing human rights violations in the country.

Irungu Houghton, the director of Amnesty International Kenya, emphasized the necessity of placing human rights at the forefront of the diplomatic engagement. In light of a recent crackdown on protests, he remarked, “As Dutch authorities prepare for the official state visit… Amnesty International calls on both authorities to place human rights at the heart of the visit.” He highlighted the tragic outcomes of recent violent protests resulting in numerous casualties and injuries, underscoring the urgency of accountability.

The environment in Kenya has seen alarming instances of excessive force used against demonstrators, leading to over 60 deaths in the past nine months. Moreover, more than 80 activists, predominantly youths, have been victims of abductions and torture, often without due process. Houghton urged the Dutch ministers and royal couple to leverage their visit to emphasize human rights within the diplomatic framework.

Amnesty International has requested that both the Kenyan and Dutch ministers publicly commit to detailing plans for improving human rights in Kenya during their visit. Houghton warned against letting economic and military interests overshadow the imperative of safeguarding human rights.

This state visit marks the first of its kind, following an invitation from President William Ruto, and signifies a strengthening of ties and cooperation between Kenya and the Netherlands.
