Wärtsilä Engines Chosen for Repowering Paraguayan Pusher Tugs

Wärtsilä will supply three engines each for two pusher tugs in Paraguay, aiming to reduce emissions and increase efficiency. The engines align with ADM’s goal of a 25% decrease in emissions by 2035. The project reflects a broader trend of sustainability in the marine sector.

Wärtsilä has been contracted to supply new engines for two pusher tugs operating in Paraguayan rivers. These vessels are owned by ADM Naviera Chaco S.R.L., a subsidiary of agribusiness giant ADM. The modifications and engine installations will take place in Asuncion, Paraguay.

The tugs named Decatur Lady and Tendota will each be fitted with three Wärtsilä 20 engines. Earlier this year, the engines were delivered to the shipyard. The Wärtsilä 20 engine is recognized for its compact design, lightweight construction, and reliable performance, making it suitable for both generator and main engine applications.

The new engines are anticipated to enhance the pusher tugs’ efficiency and reduce their environmental footprint. ADM aims for a 25% reduction in emissions by 2035, and the integration of Wärtsilä engine technology aligns with this objective, particularly in the context of South America.

“The Wärtsilä engines selected for this project have the fuel flexibility that we seek, especially as we look to the potential of alternative future fuels. At the same time, the project will help us to improve operational reliability and lower our maintenance costs,” says Raul Valdez, logistics director at ADM Naviera Chaco S.R.L.
