Tropical Cyclone Jude Claims Lives and Displaces Thousands in Southern Africa

Tropical Cyclone Jude has claimed nine lives in Mozambique and Malawi, causing widespread flooding and displacing thousands. Mozambique reported six deaths and significant damages, while Malawi reported three fatalities and around 20,000 homeless individuals. The cyclone has impeded relief efforts due to destroyed infrastructure.

Tropical Cyclone Jude has tragically resulted in the loss of at least nine lives across Mozambique and Malawi, as reported by officials. The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) in Mozambique confirmed that the cyclone claimed six lives, left 20 individuals injured, and displaced approximately 9,525 residents mainly in the provinces of Nampula, Niasa, and Zambezia.

In Malawi, the cyclone has caused three fatalities and displaced around 20,000 individuals in the southern region, leading to significant flooding. Chiphiliro Khamula, a representative from the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) in Malawi, mentioned that displaced residents are currently being accommodated in evacuation centers.

The cyclone made landfall in northern Mozambique early on Sunday before moving into southern Malawi, resulting in extensive flooding that persisted from Monday through Wednesday. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has indicated that relief efforts are being significantly hindered due to the destruction of roads and bridges. Previously, in December, Cyclone Chido impacted both nations, claiming 73 lives in Mozambique and 13 in Malawi.
