The Sovereign Order of Malta has reaffirmed its dedication to Lebanon’s stability and reconstruction through a high-level delegation visit led by Grand Chancellor Riccardo Paternò di Montecupo. The three-day tour involves exploring support strategies for Lebanon amidst its persistent crises, drawing on the guidance of the country’s new leadership.
During the delegation’s first meeting at the presidential palace in Baabda, Montecupo met with President Joseph Aoun alongside key members, including ambassador Maria Cortese and President Marwan Sahnaoui. Montecupo communicated congratulations from Grand Master John Dunlap and reiterated the Order’s commitment to Lebanon, which includes managing 60 educational and humanitarian projects and recent agreements to enhance its humanitarian efforts.
Furthermore, Montecupo announced plans for a conference in Rome following a previous gathering on Lebanon held in February. He stressed the significance of stability for economic recovery, pledging the Order’s assistance, while Aoun recognized the political will essential for rebuilding and acknowledged the importance of international collaboration in this effort. He commended the Order for its impartiality in undertaking nationwide projects.
The delegation also met with Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam to discuss the political and economic landscapes, alongside the Order’s ongoing projects. With a presence in Lebanon for over 70 years, the Order has prioritized health care, social integration, and agricultural development, reaffirming its support throughout the current reconstruction phase. The tour included visits to various humanitarian sites and the inauguration of a new agricultural project, as well as a meeting with Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Bechara Boutros al-Rahi.
