Rwanda Signs Defense Cooperation Agreement with Ethiopia

Ethiopia and Rwanda have signed a defense cooperation agreement to enhance military collaboration. The agreement follows discussions on mutual military interests. Ethiopia and Rwanda have recently formalized a defense cooperation agreement aimed at enhancing collaboration in various military sectors. The signing took place on Thursday between Field Marshal Berhanu Jula, Chief of General Staff of the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF), and Lieutenant General Mubarak Muganga, Army Chief of Staff of Rwanda. This agreement follows discussions focused on mutual military interests during Lt Gen. Mubanga’s official visit to Ethiopia.

In a press statement, Major General Teshome Gemechu, of the ENDF’s External Relations and Military Cooperation Directorate, stated that the two nations have maintained a collaborative relationship on military matters for several years. The latest agreement is intended to bolster this partnership through initiatives in counterterrorism, training, and military capacity development.

Brigadier General Patrick Karuretwa from the Rwanda Defense Force echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the longstanding ties between the two countries. He noted that Ethiopia has been a reliable supporter of Rwanda during challenging times and expressed Rwanda’s commitment to fortifying military relations with Ethiopia.

Rwanda joins a list of nations that have entered into similar agreements with Ethiopia. In November of the previous year, leaders from the military delegations of Kenya and Ethiopia convened to enhance their defense collaboration. Furthermore, in March, discussions aimed at strengthening military ties were held between Ethiopia and Qatar during a maritime defense conference.

Additionally, Field Marshal Berhanu’s visit to South Africa resulted in discussions with General Rudzani Maphwanya regarding military cooperation. Ethiopia has also signed agreements with South Sudan and the United Arab Emirates, demonstrating a strategic approach to regional defense partnerships.

The defense cooperation agreement between Ethiopia and Rwanda signifies an important step toward enhanced regional security and military collaboration.
