Malaysia’s Men’s Doubles Coach Admits Failure at All England Championships
Malaysia’s men’s doubles head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi declared the team’s All England Championships performance a failure, with all pairs crashing out in the first round. Herry noted issues such as injuries and tactical adjustments as contributing factors and expressed the need for player adaptation to his coaching style.
KUALA LUMPUR, March 14 — Malaysia’s men’s doubles head coach, Herry Iman Pierngadi, has publicly acknowledged the team’s disappointing performance at the 2025 All England Championships in Birmingham, describing it as a failure. All three pairs representing the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM)—Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, and Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King—were eliminated in the first round.
Herry, who commenced his coaching tenure with Malaysia last month, remarked that this outcome is among the most disappointing in his coaching career, particularly given his past successes with Indonesian teams. He highlighted factors such as Aaron’s lingering hand injury and a tactical adjustment that required Aaron to play at the front of the court, which ultimately hampered their performance against Denmark’s Rasmus Kjaer-Frederik Sogaard, resulting in a close defeat of 16-21, 21-16, 18-21.
The coach further noted that Wei Chong-Kai Wun had an unsatisfactory performance, as they seemed to fall into the rhythm of their opponents and lost to China’s He Ji Ting-Ren Xiang Yu with a score of 15-21, 8-21. As for Wan Arif-Roy King, their struggle with emotions during their debut match led to their defeat against China’s Huang Di-Liu Yang, 21-18, 16-21, 21-17.
At 62 years old, Herry acknowledged the need for his players to adapt to his desired playing style, revealing plans to evaluate their performance with fellow coach Muhammad Miftah once the squad returns from the championship. Herry, unfortunately, could not accompany the team to Birmingham due to visa complications.
In summary, Malaysia’s men’s doubles team faced a challenging start under their new coach, Herry Iman Pierngadi, at the 2025 All England Championships, resulting in all pairs being eliminated in the first round. Highlighted factors include injuries, tactical misalignment, and emotional control. Coach Herry has acknowledged these issues and plans to assess the team’s performance moving forward, emphasizing the need for time to adapt to his coaching style.
