Malaysia to Host Two Major International Programmes Focusing on Governance and Integrity

Malaysia will host two major international events in July: the Regional Summer Academy and the International Conference on Governance and Integrity. These events will focus on governance best practices and anti-corruption. Minister Datuk Seri Azalina announced these initiatives following a meeting in Vienna, highlighting Malaysia’s commitment to enhancing global integrity and legal frameworks.

On March 14, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Legal and Institutional Reforms) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said announced that Malaysia is set to host two significant international programmes this coming July. The first event is the Regional Summer Academy (RSA), a collaborative initiative between the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the Assembly of Parties (AoP) of the International Anti-Corruption Academy (IACA), scheduled for July 11 to 14.

The second programme is the International Conference on Governance and Integrity, which will take place on July 15. This conference is organized by the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Department (BHEUU) in partnership with MACC, IACA, and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. Azalina highlighted that these events would serve as essential platforms for discussing governance best practices and enhancing anti-corruption efforts.

In her statement, Azalina, who presides over the 13th Assembly of Parties at IACA, noted that these programmes were discussed during the recent IACA Bureau Meeting held in Vienna, Austria, where she chaired her inaugural extended bureau meeting. The IACA Bureau regularly convenes to address strategic direction, financial standing, and human resources management matters within the agency.

As the leader of the AoP Bureau, which comprises 77 countries and four international organizations, Azalina emphasized the significance of the meeting in shaping IACA’s methodologies for combating corruption. Additionally, the meeting’s agenda included preparation discussions for the upcoming 14th Session of the AoP, scheduled toward the year’s end.

The meeting brought together Malaysia’s Ambassador to Austria, Ikram Mohammad Ibrahim, along with senior officials from IACA, MACC, and BHEUU. Furthermore, Azalina had a courtesy call with Anna Joubin-Bret, Secretary of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), during which they explored Malaysia’s intention to adopt UNCITRAL’s Model Law on Cross-Border Insolvency. This move is aimed at aligning Malaysia’s insolvency framework with global best practices, illustrating the country’s commitment to legal innovation and effective economic governance during its ASEAN 2025 Chairmanship.
