Iraqi Prime Minister Announces Death of Islamic State Leader Amid New Cooperation with Syria

The head of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, Abdallah Maki Mosleh al-Rifai, was killed in an operation by Iraqi intelligence and U.S. forces. Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani announced the operation, which coincided with a visit by Syrian officials to discuss collaboration against IS. Both countries aim to strengthen ties to confront security threats amid concerns of IS resurgence following the instability in Syria.

The Iraqi Prime Minister announced on Friday the death of the Islamic State’s leader in Iraq and Syria, Abdallah Maki Mosleh al-Rifai, also known as “Abu Khadija.” This operation involved the Iraqi national intelligence service and U.S.-led coalition forces, marking a significant achievement in the fight against terrorism. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani stated that Iraqis continue to achieve victories over terrorist forces.

The operation took place in Anbar province through an airstrike, with officials confirming al-Rifai’s death on Friday. This announcement coincided with the Syrian Foreign Minister’s visit to Iraq, where both nations discussed collaboration to combat IS. Iraqi Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein emphasized the joint challenges faced by both societies in relation to IS.

Hussein also mentioned the establishment of an operations room comprising Syria, Iraq, Turkey, Jordan, and Lebanon aimed at addressing IS threats, which will soon commence its work. Despite tense relations following the fall of former Syrian President Bashar Assad, both countries highlighted their historical ties and the potential benefits of strengthening their partnership.

As Iraq grows increasingly concerned about a possible resurgence of IS following Assad’s fall, the cooperation between Iraq and Syria is deemed vital. While the U.S. and Iraq had previously agreed to reduce the military presence in Iraq, the changing dynamics have prompted a reevaluation of this strategy among Iraqi leaders, especially within the Coordination Framework coalition that supports the current government.
