Ghana and Liberia Collaborate on Cocoa Production and Regional Development

Ghana, recognized as the world’s second leading cocoa producer, is set to extend its expertise to Liberia in cocoa cultivation. President John Dramani Mahama recently discussed potential collaborations with Liberia’s President Joseph Boakai, suggesting a partnership through the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) to enhance cocoa production techniques in both nations. This initiative will likely benefit from Ghana’s extensive research and experience in the field.

During a credential ceremony in Accra, President Mahama emphasized the shared history between Ghana and Liberia, highlighting their close ties forged through mutual support during conflicts. He acknowledged Ghanaian soldiers’ sacrifices in the Liberian Civil War, which contributed to the nations’ allied relationship. Furthermore, he noted the welcoming of many Liberian refugees in Ghana during that time, underscoring the bond shared by the two peoples.

The President also addressed regional security concerns, particularly the rising threat of terrorism affecting West Africa. Following a visit to the Alliance of Sahel States, he stressed the importance of regional collaboration against terrorism to prevent its spread across the Sahel region.

Looking towards infrastructural development, President Mahama expressed optimism about the Lagos-Abidjan corridor highway and proposed extending the route to Dakar, promoting trade within the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Additionally, he suggested establishing a ferry service from Monrovia to Lagos to enhance the movement of goods and people across West Africa.

Ambassador Musu Jatu Ruhle of Liberia praised President Mahama for his election success and conveyed greetings from the Liberian President, expressing a desire for close cooperation between the two governments moving forward.
