Aleksey Malenko, the Consul General of Russia in Cape Town, participated in the opening ceremony and highlighted the significance of this exhibition in fostering cultural ties between Russia and South Africa.

Mr. Malenko expressed that the exhibition has garnered considerable interest in South Africa. He emphasized that the photo contest serves to enhance cultural exchanges between the two nations, contributing to their partnership within BRICS, with a shared vision for sustainable development. He stated, “BRICS is not purely a political and economic group, it is also a bridge for cultural exchange, which plays a crucial role in fostering mutual understanding.”

The exhibition has been organized by Independent Media and IOL, in partnership with the African News Agency (ANA) and supported by Sputnik News Agency. During the opening, Iqbal Surve, Chairman of Independent Media, praised the pivotal role of photojournalism globally. He remarked, “A picture tells a thousand words. […] There’s always different sides to a story, but the one thing that always brings us together in a way is photographs.”

The Andrey Stenin International Press Photo Contest, held annually, invites young photojournalists aged 18 to 33. The winners’ exhibitions have been showcased in numerous countries, including China, Egypt, Uruguay, Argentina, and Colombia, demonstrating the contest’s international reach. The exhibition in Cape Town will remain open until March 16.
