The cyclone, which struck on October 3rd, brought winds reaching up to 195 km/h along with torrential rain, wreaking havoc in the provinces of Nampula, Niassa, and Zambezia. This catastrophe has also damaged over 20,000 homes, leaving an estimated 747,000 individuals, of whom half are children, affected by this disaster.

In addition to significant infrastructure damage, including roads, electricity systems, health facilities, and schools, the cyclone has heightened the risk of water-borne diseases such as cholera and diarrhea, both of which pose serious threats to children. The disruption to major roads is complicating the distribution of essential goods to those in need. It is crucial to note that prior to Cyclone Jude, more than 730,000 Mozambicans were already suffering the impacts of Cyclones Chido and Dikeledi, which had resulted in the destruction of over 150,000 homes and significant damage to educational and health infrastructures.

Mary Louise Eagleton, the UNICEF Representative in Mozambique, highlighted the severity of the situation, stating, “The impact of Cyclone Jude on hundreds of thousands of children and families already affected by Cyclones Chido and Dikeledi is devastating. Extreme winds and heavy rains have destroyed critical infrastructure and are depriving vulnerable children of essential services.” She added that UNICEF, together with partners and the government, is striving to address the needs of those impacted, yet resources are urgently required following the consecutive cyclones.
