Brazil and Paraguay Initiate 48th Operation New Alliance to Combat Drug Trafficking

Brazil and Paraguay launched the 48th edition of Operation New Alliance to combat drug trafficking. Brazil and Paraguay have initiated the 48th edition of Operation New Alliance, which commenced on October 10, with the aim of combating drug trafficking across their shared border. This collaborative effort includes the Federal Police (PF) of Brazil, Paraguay’s National Anti-Drug Secretariat (Senad), military personnel from the Joint Task Force (FTC), and members of the Paraguayan Public Ministry.

Operation New Alliance utilizes both land vehicles and helicopters to target the dry border strip located between Amambay, Paraguay, and Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. This initiative is focused on dismantling marijuana plantations and facilities utilized by drug traffickers for processing illegal substances.

According to a report from Senad, six prior editions of the operation in 2024 have resulted in the destruction of over 4.5 tons of marijuana, primarily still in its plant form, with an estimated yield of about three tons per hectare. The current phase is expected to last for approximately ten days, concluding next week, and will predominantly take place within Paraguayan territory, supported by mapped intelligence from the Brazilian Federal Police.

On October 12, authorities from both countries convened in Asunción to bolster their cooperation. Jalil Rachid, head of Senad, welcomed a delegation led by Felipe Tavares Seixas, the director of International Cooperation of the PF. During this meeting, participants reviewed past efforts and strategized future collaborative operations to eliminate illicit drug crops, enhance intelligence exchange, and improve operational capacities.

The 48th edition of Operation New Alliance exemplifies the ongoing collaboration between Brazil and Paraguay in the fight against drug trafficking. Through strategic actions targeting marijuana production and enhanced cooperation between law enforcement agencies, this operation aims to significantly reduce the prevalence of illicit drug activities in the region.
