A recent investigative report by the Austrian newspaper Der Standard has revealed troubling connections between Ramin Mirfakhrai, a lawyer based in Vienna, and entities associated with the Iranian regime. While Mirfakhrai was previously recognized for his involvement in the 2019 “Ibiza Affair,” newly released documents indicate that he may have engaged in dubious activities linked to Iran.

Der Standard reports that Mirfakhrai served as a key intermediary for an Iranian-affiliated network in Vienna, aiding high-ranking Iranian officials with visa applications. This operation was conducted through Blue River Holding GmbH, a Vienna-based firm purportedly facilitating access to Europe for Iranian elites, circumventing international sanctions. Additionally, the company reportedly aimed to develop a financial transaction system between Iran and Europe to evade sanctions.

The report further claims that Mirfakhrai’s functions exceeded mere legal representation; he reportedly took part in financial negotiations as well. In 2021, Blue River sought a €10 million bank loan for Iranian projects, wherein Mirfakhrai supposedly engaged with former right-wing Austrian politicians to mediate discussions regarding financing terms, as documented in internal notes.

Additionally, Mirfakhrai was involved in negotiations to export luxury vehicles to Iran through a partnership with the British automobile manufacturer Bentley. This deal included a collaboration with Zar Group, a Tehran-headquartered company with extensive links to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), supported publicly by Iranian leaders.

Despite this evidence, Mirfakhrai asserts his innocence, claiming ignorance about Blue River’s full operations and distancing himself from the company. Nevertheless, Der Standard questions his assertions, noting the repeated mention of his name in Blue River documents, which casts doubt on his credibility.
