On March 12, 2025, the African Union (AU) expressed serious concern regarding the developments related to the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). The AU has placed significant emphasis on the necessity of maintaining stability and peace in the region, urging all involved parties to demonstrate restraint and engage in productive discussions.
The AU calls on all parties to adhere to the obligations set forth in the Permanent Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (COHA) established between the TPLF and the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in November 2022 in Pretoria. The importance of adhering to the COHA is critical to preserving the fragile peace and creating conditions that will support sustainable development, reconciliation, and peacebuilding efforts.
The AU reiterates its steadfast commitment to supporting the execution of the Permanent COHA and assures its readiness to work alongside all stakeholders throughout this process. Through its High-Level Panel, the AU is prepared to facilitate ongoing dialogue and cooperation among the conflicting parties to foster a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
The African Union remains vigilant regarding the situation in Tigray, emphasizing the need for all parties to uphold the Permanent Cessation of Hostilities Agreement. By promoting dialogue and cooperation, the AU aims to maintain peace, encourage reconciliation, and support sustainable development in the region. The collective efforts of all stakeholders are essential in moving towards a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
