Yango Drives Job Creation and Expansion in Cameroon
Yango, owned by Yandex, claims to have created over 6,000 jobs in Cameroon since its 2021 launch. The company has expanded to Bafoussam, aiming to enhance transport services and employment opportunities. With over 150,000 users, Yango continues to affirm its commitment to growth despite previous operational challenges.
Yango, the ride-hailing service owned by Yandex, asserts that it has generated over 6,000 direct and indirect jobs in Cameroon since its inception in 2021. Clovis Pilla, Yango’s Country Manager, emphasizes that the platform transcends mere connectivity between passengers and drivers, acting as a vital contributor to the nation’s digital and economic advancement. Currently, more than 150 transport companies collaborate with Yango, enhancing employment opportunities further.
Having initially focused its operations in Douala and Yaoundé, Yango announced its expansion to Bafoussam on March 5, 2025, which serves as the capital of the West region. This expansion is part of Yango’s mission to deliver “efficient and affordable” transport solutions throughout Cameroon, with the additional benefit of instigating new job opportunities in the region.
This launch in Bafoussam marks the beginning of Yango’s broader expansion strategy. The company has successfully renewed its operating license for another five years and intends to increase its presence in more cities. Pilla indicated, “Over the next five years, we plan to expand to additional cities, introduce new services, and strengthen our integration with digital financial solutions,” although he did not disclose specific future locations.
Since its launch, Yango has attracted a considerable user base, boasting over 150,000 active monthly users. However, the company has faced hurdles, notably a suspension in February 2023 due to licensing complications, which was resolved seven months later. Yango is now committed to fulfilling its ambitions in Cameroon, which it identifies as “having strong potential,” with plans to enhance urban mobility in a region where public transport is often inadequate.
Yango’s operational success in Cameroon demonstrates the potential impact of digital platforms on job creation and economic growth. With over 6,000 jobs generated and plans for further expansion, Yango seeks to enhance both urban mobility and its service offerings. Despite facing challenges, its renewed commitment reflects a strong belief in the potential of the Cameroonian market, aiming to transform the local transport landscape effectively.
