The crowd included Argentina’s football ultras, known as “Barrabravas,” who wield significant influence and maintain connections to the criminal underworld. The trade union federation CGT criticized the government for what they termed “savage actions” against the demonstrators.

Buenos Aires Governor Axel Kicillof condemned the police’s actions as “ferocious, illegal, and premeditated,” asserting that the response to the pensioners’ protest reflected an assault on democratic rights. He expressed, “A barrage of violence against pensioners and citizens protesting against the austerity measures,” highlighting the inhumane treatment of the citizens involved.

Since taking office in December 2023, Javier Milei has enacted radical reforms, resulting in significant cuts to social programs and the termination of thousands of civil servant positions. Although his austerity policies have successfully curbed inflation, the detrimental effect on the economy has left over 50% of the population living in poverty.
