UNITEL and Ericsson Modernize Angola’s Telecommunications Network

UNITEL, in collaboration with Ericsson, initiates a network modernization in Angola to improve connectivity through Enhanced Mobile Broadband and Fixed Wireless Access. The migration to a dual-mode 5G Core fosters both 4G and 5G services. UNITEL, in partnership with Ericsson, has embarked on a comprehensive network modernization initiative aiming to improve connectivity in Angola. This upgrade will enhance Enhanced Mobile Broadband and Fixed Wireless Access services essential for economic progress and support for advanced applications with high-speed and low-latency demands.

Ericsson has successfully transformed UNITEL S.A.’s core network by deploying its dual-mode 5G Core, IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), and Cloud Native Infrastructure solutions. This innovative architecture integrates both 4G and 5G technologies on a single platform, allowing UNITEL to provide tailored services through network slicing and offering improved voice and data services using a 5G standalone (5G SA) network.

By combining Evolved Packet Core (EPC) and 5G Core within its dual-mode 5G Core, Ericsson has enabled seamless transitions from legacy 2G and 3G voice services to 4G and 5G networks. Additionally, this combination supports real-time communication for businesses and consumers across various access networks, as facilitated by Ericsson’s IMS.

A recent successful trial of a data call on UNITEL’s live 5G Standalone network confirms the capabilities of 5G technology. This landmark achievement highlights UNITEL’s commitment to rolling out next-generation 5G services, including network slicing and innovative technological advancements.

Júlio Gonçalves, Director of Core and Services at UNITEL, emphasized the significance of this collaboration, stating, “Our partnership with Ericsson marks a transformative moment for Angola’s telecommunications sector. It enables us to provide our customers with a world-class network that will drive socio-economic growth and advancement across the country.”

The strategic upgrade will enable a range of services, including Voice over LTE (VoLTE), Wi-Fi Calling, 5G Voice, Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), and high-speed, low-latency applications. Such advancements are projected to significantly enhance connectivity and contribute to economic growth in Angola.
