On Tuesday, Samaritan Turo Darboe, through the Vision Development Foundation (VDF), donated nearly 4,000 bags of ten-kilogram sugar to various stakeholders including political parties, organizations, and individuals. This generous act highlights VDF’s commitment to both poverty alleviation and community empowerment, facilitating immediate assistance while fostering long-term social responsibility.
The National People’s Party (NPP) and the United Democratic Party (UDP) were each allocated 300 bags of sugar, while other political entities and wards received 200 and 150 bags, respectively. Additionally, 200 bags were donated to the Christian Council, 171 to the National Assembly, and 100 to individuals with disabilities, showcasing a wide-ranging distribution plan.
Mr. Darboe, noted for his philanthropy, particularly during Ramadan and Tobaski, has been away from the country for health reasons for six months. His history of generosity includes distributing food and livestock to both Muslim and Christian communities in The Gambia during festive periods.
Saihou Fofana, the Public Relations Officer of VDF, praised Mr. Darboe’s humanitarian efforts, indicating that the sugar distribution aims to support communities throughout Ramadan. The sugar was distributed via political parties to ensure it reached those considered underprivileged.
Karafa Sonko, representing the UDP, expressed gratitude for the assistance provided to the Muslim community during Ramadan, highlighting how the coalition of political parties illustrated unity among Gambians. He acknowledged VDF’s inclusive approach in assisting multiple parties rather than just a select few.
Lamin Saho, from the NPP, extended appreciation for VDF’s generosity, ensuring that the bags of sugar would be distributed to underserved communities in Kanifing Municipality and surrounding areas. Honorable Samba Jallow, representing the National Reconciliation Party (NRP), reflected on previous donations made to provincial National Assembly members, welcoming the initiative to unite all political groups.
Ismaila Jallow, the councilor for Suba Ward, remarked on the timely nature of the donation, pointing out the increasing requests for sugar, rice, and oil among the local population, and noted that this gesture from VDF effectively addressed these needs.
In conclusion, Turo Darboe’s recent donation of 3,689 bags of sugar not only provides immediate relief to vulnerable communities in The Gambia but also reinforces the Vision Development Foundation’s dedication to social responsibility. The act has garnered commendations from various political representatives, symbolizing unity and collective effort among different political entities to support their constituents during Ramadan.
