Tragic RSF Attack in Sudan’s Darfur City Results in Civilian Deaths and Injuries
Darfur Governor Arcua Minnawi reported at least 20 civilian deaths during a recent RSF attack in Al-Fashir, condemning it as a “horrific massacre.” Local NGOs indicated higher casualty numbers, urging for immediate global intervention. The RSF has also targeted the Zamzam refugee camp amid escalating violence, leading to widespread humanitarian concerns and growing fatalities since the conflict began in April 2023.
On Wednesday, Darfur Governor Arcua Minnawi announced that at least 20 civilians were killed in an attack by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Al-Fashir, the capital of North Darfur State. He characterized the assault as a “horrific massacre” aimed at civilians, prompting demands for international intervention to protect the populace.
Reports from the Sudan Doctors Network, a local NGO, corroborate these claims, stating that 21 individuals were killed and 13 others injured in the RSF’s assault. The organization is advocating for immediate global intervention to mitigate the ongoing bloodshed in Sudan.
The RSF attack also extended to Al Fashir’s Zamzam refugee camp, which has been previously highlighted for its dire humanitarian conditions, including famine declared by UNICEF in August. The camp faced artillery shelling, with reports from the Resistance Committees indicating an earlier incident that resulted in 8 deaths and 13 injuries. Both the United Nations and Doctors Without Borders have condemned these recent attacks.
Amid escalating violence, Al-Fashir has been a battleground between the Sudanese army and RSF militia since May 10, despite international alerts regarding the city’s vital humanitarian role for the region. Fighting has been rampant in Sudan since April 2023, resulting in over 20,000 deaths and displacing more than 14 million individuals, as reported by the UN and local authorities.
There has been no official response from the RSF regarding these accusations.
The recent attack in Al-Fashir has underscored the escalating humanitarian crisis in Darfur, with significant civilian casualties reported. With the ongoing conflict between the RSF and the Sudanese army, the situation continues to deteriorate, raising urgent calls for international intervention. The alarming statistics surrounding displacement and fatalities further illustrate the dire need for sustained humanitarian assistance in the region.
