The Gambia Affirms Ongoing Support for Rohingya Issue Amid Bilateral Agreement

On March 13, 2025, Bangladesh and The Gambia formalized their diplomatic relations by signing a visa exemption agreement for holders of diplomatic and official passports. Dr. Tangara, currently the chair of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), stressed the importance of ensuring the rights of the Rohingya people are honored, stating, “We are dedicated to ensuring that their voices are heard and that they can return to their homeland with dignity.” He emphasized the ongoing struggle for justice at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the necessity for a sustainable resolution to the humanitarian crisis.

He acknowledged Bangladesh’s role in hosting over a million Rohingya refugees, stating, “We have achieved major victories at the ICJ, but the struggle is far from over.” In addition, he articulated the need for international collaboration to maintain pressure for justice. Minister Tangara also addressed broader cooperation avenues between both nations, particularly in agriculture and peacekeeping, citing Bangladesh’s impressive strides in food self-sufficiency.

Speaking on the impacts of global events, Tangara referred to lessons learned from the Covid-19 pandemic, pointing out that, “no nation exists in isolation. We are interdependent, and global challenges require collective action.” Home Adviser Lt Gen (Retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury remarked on The Gambia’s commendable support, reinforcing that the Rohingya crisis transcends regional issues and requires global attention and cooperation.

Home Adviser Chowdhury articulated optimism for expanded collaboration, envisioning potential partnerships in diverse sectors such as agriculture and IT services. He expressed gratitude to Dr. Tangara for his commitment to strengthening relations. The ceremony concluded with both nations pledging to jointly pursue justice for the Rohingya people and to enhance diplomatic and economic cooperation moving forward.
