Senator Sifuna Among African Leaders Denied Entry into Angola

On March 14, Senator Edwin Sifuna from Nairobi, Kenya, was part of a group of prominent African political leaders denied entry into Angola, despite having been invited by the opposition party, the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA). This delegation included Tanzania’s Tundu Lissu and various other influential politicians.

The delegation arrived in Luanda for a scheduled two-day meeting; however, Angolan immigration officials prohibited their entry. Senator Sifuna expressed disappointment, stating, “UNITA President Adalberto Costa invited us to Angola. The government has denied us entry!”

Tundu Lissu criticized the actions of the Angolan authorities, labeling them as unacceptable and highlighting the denial of entry for himself and over twenty senior leaders from southern Africa. This group comprised notable figures, including a First Vice President from Tanzania, a former President of Botswana, and representatives from nations such as Kenya, South Africa, and the United States.

Lissu reminisced about Tanzania’s historical contributions to Angola’s fight for independence, asserting that as members of SADC, Tanzanians should not have to seek visas for entry. He stated, “Tanzania hosted Dr. Antonio Agostinho Neto and his MPLA fighters in their early years of struggle.”

Prior to their visit, a formal request for border visas was submitted to Angolan authorities. Lucas Tomas Kanutula, UNITA’s Office Director, confirmed that the party would assume full responsibility for the visiting delegation. Despite these assurances, the group ultimately faced denial of entry, and the Angolan government has not yet released an official rationale for this decision.
