Reconstruction Progress in Macomia: The Role of the Mozambique Recovery Mechanism

The Mozambique Recovery Mechanism is facilitating reconstruction in Macomia following Cyclone Kenneth’s devastation in 2019. UNDP has been pivotal, enabling the rebuilding of infrastructure, healthcare, and educational facilities. Significant improvements include essential services and enhanced community resilience, supported by international funding and partnerships.

On March 13, 2025, it was reported that Macomia, a region heavily impacted by Cyclone Kenneth in 2019, is making progress in its recovery thanks to the Mozambique Recovery Mechanism (MRF). The initiative focuses on reconstructing essential infrastructure with an emphasis on resilience and sustainability, which aims to improve living conditions for the local population.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has been instrumental in the recovery process following the damage caused by Cyclones Idai and Kenneth in 2019, along with Cyclone Freddy in 2023. These significant natural disasters led to extensive destruction and considerable displacement, particularly affecting Zambézia Province due to Cyclone Freddy and Cabo Delgado Province due to Cyclone Kenneth, which devastated Macomia by destroying vital public infrastructure and heightening community vulnerability.

In response to these challenges, the UNDP, alongside the Government of Mozambique and international entities, initiated the MRF to facilitate sustainable recovery in affected areas. In Macomia, this has manifested through the reconstruction of government buildings, health facilities, schools, and water supply systems, essential for providing crucial services to the local community.

The rehabilitation efforts have included various significant projects: the upgrade of District Services for Planning and Infrastructure (SDPI) Buildings, now enhanced with solar power and improved security, catering to over 30,000 residents; the operational status of Macomia Police Station; and the improved access to legal services at the Macomia Attorney Building serving over 138,000 individuals. Educational rehabilitation has expanded access to classrooms at EPC Salas Anexas de Macomia Sede and Xinavane Primary School, significantly benefiting numerous children. Additionally, the maternity ward and health center have been rehabilitated to provide essential healthcare services to thousands of community members.

The MRF’s efforts continue to foster positive developments, and thanks is extended to all funding partners, especially the European Union for significant support, along with contributions from Canada, Finland, the Netherlands, Norway, India, and China.
