This backing coincides with Mauritius’ renewed calls for a formal treaty to resolve its longstanding dispute with the United Kingdom concerning the Chagos Archipelago, which contains a significant military base operated by both the US and UK.

Modi emphasized, “In the context of Chagos, we fully respect the sovereignty of Mauritius,” and highlighted the importance of a secure Indian Ocean in light of China’s growing influence. He also stressed the commitment of India and Mauritius to enhance their collaborative efforts through various platforms, including the Colombo Security Conclave and the Indian Ocean Conference.

After completing a two-day state visit, PM Modi returned to Delhi from Mauritius. His visit was marked by his role as the chief guest at the National Day celebrations on March 12, 2025, which he attended for the second time. Modi expressed pride in India’s position as a trusted partner in Mauritius’ developmental journey and reinforced the countries’ joint efforts to support initiatives for the Global South.

During this historic visit, Modi was honored with the Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean, making him the first Indian recipient of this prestigious award. Last month, former President Trump voiced his support for an agreement concerning the future of the US-British military base located in the Chagos Archipelago, which has been operational since the 1970s.
